 NANZA Tl;dr

The Peak Design Pro Tripod lineup—comprising the Pro Lite, Pro, and Pro Tall—is a professional-grade evolution of Peak Design’s original Travel Tripod, re-engineered for creators who demand both portability and exceptional stability. Designed in collaboration with world-renowned adventure photographer Jimmy Chin, these tripods are built with CNC-machined metal hubs, carbon fiber legs, and innovative features to meet the demands of hybrid photo-video workflows. Each model folds down compactly (under 3.7 inches in diameter) but can support massive payloads (up to 40 pounds), making them ideal for full-frame DSLR and cinema camera setups. With new innovations like a fluid-compatible ball head, optional Tilt Mod, and enhanced leg locks, this tripod series is optimized for everything from fast-paced field photography to demanding commercial video production.

Summary

Carbon-Fiber Legs

The Pro Tripods are crafted using high-strength carbon fiber legs and a central hub made from CNC-machined aluminum, resulting in an incredibly rigid yet lightweight build. The hexagonal leg shape resists twisting and flex, offering pro-level durability that stands up to outdoor abuse, rough travel, and long-term use. It’s the kind of build you’d expect in high-end expedition gear, made to perform flawlessly in extreme environments.

Massive Load Capacity

Unlike most compact tripods that max out around 15–20 pounds, the Pro and Pro Tall support up to 40 pounds, while the Pro Lite supports 35 pounds. This is more than enough to handle large DSLRs, cinema cameras, heavy lenses, external monitors, and even fluid heads, making this one of the most capable portable tripods available for professional creators.

Compact Folded Design

Despite the heavy-duty performance, the tripods collapse down to a remarkably compact footprint—roughly the diameter of a soda can (~3.7 inches). The design eliminates wasted space by nesting the legs tightly around the center column, so even the Pro Tall (which extends to 77 inches) can fit in a side pocket of a camera bag or backpack. It’s a rare blend of professional capacity and true portability.

Integrated Fluid Panning

The redesigned Pro Ball Head now includes a fluid panning mechanism and allows for tilting the camera up to 15° in any direction without raising the center column. This allows videographers to get dynamic shots, pans, and horizon-level adjustments while maintaining full tripod stability—a key improvement over previous versions.

Quick-Release

Camera mounting is faster and more secure thanks to a refined quick-release plate system that uses an Arca-Swiss standard. The new model includes a dual-stage locking mechanism that prevents accidental drops, even during fast-paced shoots. This also means you're not locked into proprietary gear—many camera plates will fit.

Optional Tilt Mod

The Tilt Mod accessory, sold separately, can be added to transform the ball head into a traditional pan-tilt system, giving users more precise control over camera movement, especially for video work. It’s a modular solution that makes the tripod more versatile without adding bulk when you don’t need it.

Improved Leg Locking Mechanism

The leg cams have been fully redesigned to open and close more smoothly and grip tighter with less force. The center column features a flanged hex design that dramatically reduces wobble and increases rigidity when extended—perfect for tall setups and long-lens shooting. It’s a meaningful upgrade for anyone who’s dealt with leg slippage or shaky columns on cheaper tripods.

Hidden Smartphone Mount

A compact universal smartphone mount and a hex tool are cleverly hidden inside the center column, allowing you to mount a phone for behind-the-scenes content or vertical video, and quickly make field adjustments to your tripod hardware. It’s a thoughtful inclusion that supports real-world flexibility without adding clutter.

 What We Love

1.  Tool-Free Setup

The Peak Design Pro Tripod series features an entirely tool-free design for rapid deployment and breakdown, allowing creators to transition between setups in seconds. Its low-profile cam levers, single-action ball head adjustment, and ergonomic leg locks make the entire process of extending, adjusting, and stowing the tripod fast and fluid—even with gloves on or in tight shooting conditions.

2.  Co-Designed

The tripod series was co-developed with Jimmy Chin, the Oscar-winning director, elite mountaineer, and National Geographic photographer. His influence brings a focus on ruggedness, speed, and usability in challenging field conditions—from vertical cliff faces to documentary sets. This pedigree adds not just credibility but real functional insight into how gear should behave under pressure.

 What We Don't

1. Price-to-Value Ratio

With early Kickstarter pricing ranging from $599 to $999, plus add-ons like the Tilt Mod ($149.95), the total cost can quickly exceed that of other high-end tripods with similar core functionality (e.g. Gitzo, Really Right Stuff, or Benro models). While the build quality and design are excellent, many photographers may find that they’re paying a significant premium for compactness and modularity that they don't fully utilize.

 Is it Worth it?

The Peak Design Pro Tripod is worth purchasing because it expertly balances professional-grade durability, advanced functionality, and portability in a single package. Built with premium carbon-fiber legs and precision CNC-machined components, it delivers exceptional strength and stability capable of supporting heavy camera setups—up to 40 pounds—making it suitable for everything from DSLR photography to cinema video production. Its compact folded size fits easily into backpacks, making it ideal for creators who need rugged gear on the go without sacrificing performance. The innovative fluid-compatible ball head and optional Tilt Mod add versatility for both photographers and videographers, while features like integrated tool storage and a smartphone mount enhance convenience. Though premium priced, the tripod’s thoughtful design, expert collaboration with Jimmy Chin, and proven Kickstarter pedigree ensure you’re investing in a reliable, high-performance tool that elevates your shooting experience, especially if portability and modularity are priorities.
